Scaling Up Nutrition: What Will It Cost?
What resources are needed to fight undernutrition? This report offers a preliminary answer by estimating the cost of scaling up a minimal pack- age of 13 proven nutrition interventions from current coverage levels to full coverage of the target populations in the 36 countries with the highest burden of undernutrition. These countries account for 90 percent of all children whose growth has been stunted by inadequate nutrition. Reviewed interventions belong to three main groups: (1) behavior change interventions, (2) micronutrient supplements and deworming, and (3) complementary and therapeutic feeding. Most of these interventions need to be implemented in partnership with the health sector and will complement the efforts at health systems strengthening that are currently underway in many countries. As these interventions are added, additional benefits can be expected.
