This report follows a meeting held at the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center in November 2012. Participants discussed the intersection of science and policy, with a focus on diet. Specifically, participants discussed how fats and sugar contribute to epidemics of non-communicable diseases (NCD’s) worldwide. The report concludes that sugar consumption, especially in the form of high energy fructose in soft drinks, poses a major health threat, and that most diets (although with regional differences) are deficient in omega-3 fatty acids and too high in omega-6 fatty acids. The authors propose establishing regional Centers on Genetics, Nutrition and Fitness for Health, and ask heads of state and government to elevate nutrition as a national priority and support access to a healthy diet as a human right.
