This brief was prepared by IFPRI Senior Researcher Harold Aldermann for the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) side meeting, "Transition from Safety Net Programs to Comprehensive Social Protection Systems: Food Security and Nutrition Perspective." Dr. Alderman highlights the effectiveness of, and challenges to, social protection programming from a nutrition perspective while drawing on evidence from different safety net programs. he also outlines an area of emerging research, which is the impact of poverty (and social protection) on individuals’ psychological stress and by extension their cognitive functions. Finally, the brief sets out a series of operational knowledge gaps about how to effectively implement nutrition-sensitive safety nets.
