State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) 2017: Leveraging Food Systems for Inclusive Rural Transformation
The State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) 2017 analyzes the rural transformations now underway in low-income countries, their impact on food systems, and the opportunities and challenges they present to millions of small-scale food producers. It underscores the fact that rural transformation does not automatically reduce poverty or improve food security. To foster rural development, policies should empower smallholder farmers, connect towns with their surrounding rural areas through the development of agro-industrial sector and infrastructure, and create agro-corridors to link food producers, processors, and institutions together in networks.
