This background paper collects key policy considerations highlighted during the discussions held in the Panel on Social Protection and Nutrition of the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2), as well as selected good practices and lessons learned from different country experiences, and transformative social protection programmes and policy initiatives with a relevant impact on nutrition outcomes. Specifically, the note explains the key concepts at stake, and then highlights how social protection can affect nutritional outcomes by tackling the immediate and underlying causes of malnutrition. Examples of safety nets from different countries substantiate the arguments. Finally, policy recommendations are set forth to what concerns both policy design and governance.
