This discussion paper highlights the barriers to collection and use of individual-level dietary data in low-income countries (LICs). Experts from the FAO and Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University argue that, despite widespread recognition of the “dual challenge of high under-nutrition rates and increasing levels of overweight and obesity”, we lack the individual-level dietary data to effectively respond. The paper introduces readers to new technological developments and research initiatives to remedy this situation, led by the International Dietary Data Expansion (INDDEX) Project.
