Maurício Antônio Lopes is an agronomist from the Federal University of Viçosa- Minas Gerais (Brazil). He has a Master of Science Degree in Genetics from Purdue University (USA), a PhD in Molecular Genetics from the University of Arizona (USA) and has carried out work as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Agriculture of the FAO-UN (Rome, Italy). He has served as a researcher at the Agricultural Research Company of Minas Gerais, as manager of Kieppe Agriculture in Bahia and also at Purina Alimentos in Rio de Janeiro. Since joining Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) in 1989, he has acted as a researcher in genetics and plant breeding. He was programme leader in maize breeding and head of Research & Development at Embrapa Maize and Sorghum (Sete Lagoas, MG); manager of Core Thematic Resources Genetic, and head of Research & Development and articulation of international Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology (Brasília, DF). He was also Head of Research and Development of Embrapa (Brasília, DF) and the responsible for implementing the Labex Korea, an international cooperation programme of Embrapa in Suwon, Republic of Korea. He was also a member of the Scientific Board of the Foundation Agropolis, Montpellier, France. He is President of Embrapa since October 2012.
